Sunday, March 3

Today is Sunday, March 3, 2024. It’s been almost 4 years since we started the Daily Gift of Vitality and we have posted over 575 messages of connection!

The Daily Gift of Vitality started as a daily anchoring message that grew out of requests from proactive and innovative department leaders at Rush University Medical Center, who listened, observed, and recognized a need to care for all persons connected to caring for others at the start of the Pandemic. It was distributed to 10’s of thousands of individuals through various caring companies and organizations around the world.

Our purpose was:

  1. To provide a single simple message simultaneously to everyone everywhere allowing individuals to learn and practice simple self-regulating actions every day for optimal health, function & recovery.
  2. To provide a reliable daily anchor- keeping it simple, easy to learn and remember – that is quick to apply.
  3. To provide a routine. Each message aimed to maintain a standardized, dependable structure to allow it to be used as a “routine” to start a day, transition from a “work” to “home” mindset or after reading/watching news/social media, or to end the day.
  4. To create a safe space to rest and recharge. The messaging was intentionally designed to provide a “safe” space and deliberately avoid using terms that could be triggering and common in current communications (ie. COVID19, pandemic, outbreak, election, etc.).
  5. To establish an easy-to-implement way to keep people connected & cared for despite being physically in different spaces.

Early on, we developed a daily anchoring statement. It can still be useful now and in the future.

“I am [*Name*]. I am doing what I can to be helpful. I love myself because I have kindness and love in my heart and soul. I am part of the global community, and we are all working together to get through this. This is temporary. We can do this. As I think about those I love and care for, I send loving kindness out to all people.”

We included an activity to release negative energy. Starting with belly breathing to stimulate the vagus nerve to calm your body, and augmenting with the healing power of box breathing.

  • Roll your shoulders back, smile to yourself, & relax your jaw.
  • Take slow deep belly breaths, allowing your stomach to rise with each breath in and relax with each breath out. You may find that each breath gets better and better. Allow your shoulders to relax on each exhale.
  • Advance the healing power of deep breathing with Box Breathing (Sama Vritti Pranayama).
    • Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4.
    • Try to feel the breath in your nose.
    • Hold your breath for a count of 4.
    • Exhale for a count of 4. Hold for a count of 4.

*You can change the duration of breathing, holding and exhaling to your comfort zone.

Looking back, we can see and have gratitude for all of the individuals that contributed to creating this safe space, including those who allowed us to share their beautiful photographs with the world and those who have inspired us and healed us through their wise words. Thank you to Nicole Siparsky, MD, who shared today’s photo, “Sunset over Lake Erie.”

Good news. Through this journey, we confirmed that around the world, there are humans that want to help others, to care for one another, to relieve suffering and to help heal other humans. We can be stronger and experience more joy by joining together. As Bono from U2 reminds us, “We are the people we have been waiting for.”

Moving forward, our future DGoV posts and posting frequency are being reconsidered. As compassionate and loving beings, please continue to stay connected to other humans and the positive energy around you. Thank you for the opportunity to hold this safe space for you since March of 2020.

With gratitude and appreciation for all beings,

Sunday, December 24

Today is Sunday, December 24, 2023. Think of all the love in the world that is possible with all the people in the world. It can spread and generate even more love.

DGoV (Daily Gift of Vitality) Activity: This week, look for all the ways we can send out love and joy: creating and sharing art or music, laughing together, holding hands, talking together, experiencing a new location or cuisine with another, teaching, mentoring, recognizing, and appreciating someone else. There are so many ways.

A quote by Vera Nazarian, “Sometimes, reaching out and taking someone’s hand is the beginning of a journey. At other times, it is allowing another to take yours.”

Thank you to Nicole Siparsky, MD for sharing this photo, “Farm/Garden, Garfield Conservatory.”

Sunday, December 17

Today is Sunday, December 17, 2023. The squirrels seem to go with the flow and enjoy the weather.

DGoV (Daily Gift of Vitality) Activity: This week, pause and make a list of all the people who have had a positive impact in your life. The list might include family, friends, loved ones, teachers, students, mentors, coaches, colleagues, and so on. Then, continue by adding the people who you might not know, the person who paved the road, the customer service rep, the farmer, the utilities worker, the engineers who designed your transportation, etc. Appreciate how connected we are to each other and how we can add to others’ lives too.

A quote by John Lennon, “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is a reality.”

Saturday, July 8

Today is Saturday, July 8, 2023. July is a great time to reflect on the first half of the year.

DGoV (Daily Gift of Vitality) Activity: Take a piece of blank paper, the largest size you can find, and think back to the first half of the year from January 1st.

Write down all the positive things that have happened, that you have experienced, that are in progress. Think through each month, maybe even peek at your calendar to refresh your memory of all the positives, the good things.

Now, if you haven’t already, add the people that are connected to any of those positives in your life. They might have had a role to play in creating that positive moment or they might just have been there to share in it with you. Make note of the person or persons who add positive ripples into your life and let them know.

A quote by Kevin Ansbro, “Focus on an ocean of positives, not a puddle of negatives.”

Thank you to Geran De Klerk for sharing this photo.

Friday, April 7

Today is Friday, April 7, 2023. The beauty as the seasons change, the delight of the new flowers, new colors, new beginnings highlight progress, new life and moving forward.

Think about this: Humans around the world, of all ages and cultures, naturally desire progress. We are curious animals. We are social beings. People are really pretty cool. When we see our efforts are making a difference, that we can understand something better, that we belong and are connected to other social beings, we can feel more grounded and secure, even in the midst of hardships.

DGoV (Daily Gift of Vitality) Activity: Consider ways you can connect deeply: let someone see that they make a difference – that there is progress; help someone engage their curiosity and teach you something new; reach out and share time being present with each other.

A quote we often do not hear enough of, “I love you!”

Thank you to Jean-Claude Dumont for this beautiful picture.

Monday, July 11

Today is Monday, July 11, 2022.  Sun, birds, water, breeze, sounds of laughter. Special moment.

A quote by Maya Angelou  “A bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”

July is for sharing.  The act of sharing offers many health benefits.  When we give to others it has a positive effect on our brain.  Sharing allows us to connect more meaningfully and strengthens social connections.  Share an experience or feeling with a close friend or loved one. Experience gratitude while tapping into the soothing nature of human connections.

    • Draw, paint, or sculpt and gift it to a friend
    • Create music to share
    • Join with others to play music with shared meaning
    • Dance with a loved one
    • Write a story or message and share it with a trusted person
    • Schedule a walk or date with a friend and talk together
    • Be present and smile together

Practice this Mindfulness Activity to Re-energize your Body and Mind whenever you need a moment to reset – while waiting, before, after, or to transition between activities:

    • Straighten your spine. Roll your shoulders back and down, smile to yourself, & relax your jaw.
    • Take slow deep belly breaths, allowing your stomach to rise with each breath in and relax with each breath out. You may find that each breath gets better and better. Allow your shoulders to relax on each exhale.
    • Practice tapping into loving energies:
      • Focus on channeling universal energies of love as you breathe in,
      • Focus on channeling the love you generate to others as you breathe out.

Recharge yourself and share positive energy when you repeat:

“I am [*Name*]. I can do this. As I connect to my inner self, I am open to the Happiness and positive energy around me. I send loving kindness and compassion to all people including me. Together, we can do great things.”

Monday, February 28

Today is Monday, February 28, 2022. As the shortest month closes, seeing what repeats and what stays the same.

A quote by Mary Oliver, “Said the river: imagine everything you can imagine, then keep on going.”

Photo from Marc Zimmer

February is the month dedicated to Love.  Love is not only a feeling it is a verb, an action. Reflect on love and caring.

    • Who do you love? Who do you care for?
    • Who loves you? Who cares for you?
    • Who do you want to love? Who do you want to care for?
    • What makes love possible? What makes it possible to care for you, for another?
    • Consider allowing more connection to the opportunities for love and caring in your life.

Use this Mindfulness Activity to Re-energize your Body and Mind whenever you need it – while waiting, before, after, or in between activities:

    • Straighten your spine. Roll your shoulders back and down, smile to yourself, & relax your jaw.
    • Take slow deep belly breaths, allowing your stomach to rise with each breath in and relax with each breath out. You may find that each breath gets better and better. Allow your shoulders to relax on each exhale.
    • Starting at your feet, on every inhale, stretch your body part. On every exhale, release.
    • Work your way up your body with every breath cycle until you finish with your eyebrows.
    • Smile if someone saw you stretching out your eyebrows. =)

Recharge yourself and share positive energy when you repeat:

“I am [*Name*]. I can do this. As I connect to my vision, courage, strength, and wisdom, I am open to the Love and positive energy around me. I send loving kindness and compassion to all people including me. Together, we can do great things.”
